Barjola Museum
The Barjola Museum in Gijón is a contemporary art museum located in an impressive historic building in the old town. It focuses on modern and contemporary Spanish art, with a strong presence of figurative and expressive works. Alongside its permanent collection, the museum hosts temporary exhibitions that keep the programming up to date and closely linked to current artistic practices.
The work donated to the Principality of Asturias by the Extremaduran painter Juan Barjola. On the three upper floors, part of Juan Barjola’s work is exhibited, focusing on the period between the mid-50s and the late 80s. The oldest paintings are displayed on the top floor, with the exception of a 1950 self-portrait that can be seen in the lobby. The work from the 60s and, especially, from the prolific 80s, is displayed on the first and second floors. On the ground floor is "The Wall of the Other Lamentations".
